Med Trails Network’s 2024 Seminar in Southern France Strengthens Regional Ties and Shared Vision

In June 2024, the village of Thoard in southern France welcomed around 30 participants for the second annual seminar of the Med Trails Network. Gathering representatives from partner organizations and invited guests, the event aimed to reflect collectively on common challenges, explore future opportunities, and improve on-the-ground trail activities across the Mediterranean.

The week’s agenda featured discussions on the economic impact of trails, climate change adaptation, biodiversity conservation, and the role of trail ecosystems in fostering community-based tourism. Each destination shared a sectoral diagnosis, highlighting common issues such as limited financial resources, institutional hurdles, and the lack of reliable monitoring tools.

A highlight of the seminar was the presentation of an international benchmarking study that showcased the positive impacts of trails on local communities and tourism destinations. Case studies introduced innovative models, including social enterprises and ambassador programs, offering inspiration for future initiatives.

Participants also visited the UNESCO Haute-Provence Geopark and hiked a section of the Routo trail. These experiences illustrated how strong governance structures and compelling narratives—such as those centered on transhumance and traditional knowledge—can support trail development and heritage conservation.

By the end of the seminar, network members had identified a range of shared priorities: the need for sustainable funding, clearer legal and political frameworks, greater awareness of climate-related issues affecting trails, improved access to data, and stronger cooperation between public and private stakeholders.

Despite the complex political context in several member regions, this in-person seminar proved essential to the cohesion and momentum of the Med Trails Network, fostering collaboration and laying the groundwork for future joint actions.
