The Med Trails Network is more than a community of trail operators — it is a collective intelligence platform dedicated to advancing knowledge on trails and their role in sustainable development across the Mediterranean region.
By pooling the expertise and resources of its members, MTN conducts joint research and development initiatives addressing the most pressing challenges shared by our communities: climate change adaptation, regenerative tourism, rural community resilience, and territorial dialogue.
Since 2023, the network has produced a wide range of studies and resources — from climate impact assessments and hiker surveys to governance benchmarks, sectoral diagnoses, and landscape atlases. These works reflect the diversity of our member organisations and contributors, spanning universities, trail management organisations, and field experts across the Mediterranean. Across all these works, common threads emerge: the economic potential of trails for rural communities, the urgency of climate adaptation, the centrality of local governance, and the power of trails as vectors of cultural identity and territorial dialogue.
From climate impact assessments conducted by the American University of Beirut across Palestine, Jordan and Lebanon, economic benchmarks by AGEG Tourism, hiker surveys carried out by Vianova across three Middle Eastern trails, and hiking sector diagnoses on the Lebanon Mountain Trail, the Jordan Trail, and the Palestinian Heritage Trail and in the South PACA region — the breadth of our knowledge base reflects the richness of Mediterranean trail ecosystems and the complexity of the challenges they face. Cartographic and landscape resources produced by Tétraktys, and governance benchmarks led by Paths of Greece further supported the development of common vision and approach for our network.
All publications are freely accessible to anyone interested in these topics. We believe that knowledge grows through exchange: we warmly invite readers to share their feedback, insights, and experiences to help us enrich our content and expand our collective knowledge base. Whether you are a trail organisation, an NGO, a research institution, or a local development actor, your perspective matters to us — and could be the starting point for future collaboration.
